I know the positive influence which can be created by a motivated, responsive teacher, and after two decades in the college and university classroom, working with students ranging in ages from fourteen to seventy-nine, drawn from every culture and creed in the state of California, often those most at risk because of previous academic difficulties, I know how to create an effective, welcoming learning space where students do well--not just for the semester, but for their entire time in school as they persist and receive degrees or transfer, and I still keep in touch with many of them at their initiative via the use of online social learning systems, seeing the impact of my work as they succeed and grow in their own lives. My journey as a teacher began at UC Riverside in 1995, where I was an autonomous Teaching Assistant and then full-time Lecturer, working with those most at risk of university expulsion in the Writing Resource Center and in computer- and online-assisted classes. As a result of my efforts with second-language students (one section having produced half of the successful Subject A results from a cohort of fourteen classes), I was appointed as Assistant Director for ESL and Testing, where I directly coordinated the efforts of a dozen instructors and had oversight of more than seventy before becoming Summer Director of the Writing Program and its mandate of oversight over all developmental course offerings. In 2002, my family relocated to Northern California, and I was hired for Spring 2003 as a sabbatical replacement at Los Medanos College, where I was commended by the then-department chair for my insistence on student skill acquisition and holding students to grading standards necessary to be truly prepared for transfer-level work across the curriculum. I was then employed for the next year as an adjunct at LMC, NVC, City College of San Francisco, and Solano College before being hired for a full-time position at the latter school in 2004, where I received tenure, co-coordinated and taught in the Puente Program, served as the Coordinator of Basic Skills, and designed and taught the entire range of developmental, composition, and literary courses until January 2013, when I resigned to spend more time in my twins' lives.
